Course structure
- Module 1: Introduction to First Aid
- Module 2: Basic anatomy and physiology
- Module 3: Legal issues in first aid
- Module 4: Resuscitation and airway emergencies
- Module 5: Medical emergencies part 1
- Module 6: Reporting and documentation
Course Delivery
The course is delivered in a flexible manner, with an online theory component followed by a 4-hour face-to-face session for demonstration and assessments of the practical skills.
- The students are required to complete 8 hours of online theory.
- It is a requirement that this be completed prior to attending the class.
- The online theory is made up of 6 modules
Entry Requirements
The following are the admission criteria for the unit in place at IHNA:
- Applicants must be aged 18 years or over.
- Basic Level of Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) knowledge required to follow the theory & assessments and to demonstrate the practical skill components.
- Basic computer skills required to complete the online theory and assessments.
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders are encouraged to apply.
Course assessment
Assessment is competency based and is conducted in accordance with the Health Training Package and the standards outlined in the units of competency in the industry Training Package qualifications.
It includes
- Multiple-Choice Questionnaire with 100% pass mark at the end of the self-directed theory (must be completed prior to your practical class)
- Simulation Based Assessments: Practical skills of this unit are performed in a simulated environment at IHNA’s nursing laboratory. This includes;
- cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to adult and infant
- automated external defibrillator (AED) to deliver at least one shock
- responding appropriately in the event of regurgitation or vomiting managed casualties, with the following:
- anaphylaxis and EpiPen
- asthma,puffer,spacer
- non-life-threatening bleeding
- choking
- shock
- handing over to emergency services
- providing an accurate verbal report of the incident
- reviewing the incident
Students who have not completed the online theory will not be admitted into the class and Simulation Based Assessments (practical skills).
