This course is designed for individuals who have a Certificate III or higher in an area that involves providing direct care or support to clients, or who work in various care and support roles in health care settings and want to learn how to assist clients with their medications. It provides you with the opportunity to develop real-world skills that organisations in the health sector are looking for.
You will learn how to adequately assist a person with medicine administration in this three-week (blended delivery) course. Additionally, you’ll learn about
- Commonly prescribed medicines and their potential side effects.
- The safe administration of oral drugs, drops, creams, and lotions, as well as how drugs interact with the body’s systems
- Legislation and guidelines for medication administration in residential, community, and disability settings

Course Overview

- The theory component is provided through a supervised, structured online mode of delivery. It will be delivered and assessed over 150 hours, which will include online theory, as per the session plan, simulation training and self-paced structured e-learning.

HLTAAP001 – Recognise healthy body systems
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to work with basic information about the human body and to recognise and promote ways to maintain healthy functioning of the body.
This unit applies to any worker who needs to use and interpret information that includes references to client anatomy and physiology.
The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice.
HLTHPS006 – Assist Clients with medication
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare for and provide medication assistance and complete medication documentation. It also involves supporting a client to self-administer medication.
This unit applies to community services and health workers with authority in their state or territory to assist with the administration of medication.
The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice.
Where Will this Take Me?
This skill set applies to community services and health personnel with the authority to assist with medication. The following roles may entail a diverse set of skills that this course will help them develop:
- Assistant in Home Care
- In-Home Respite Worker

Admission Requirements
IHNA has in place admission criteria for courses in its scope as required by its ‘Application and Enrolment Procedure for VET Courses’ to ensure that candidates meet industry requirements.
- Applicants are required to be aged 18 years or over
- Applicants must be employed in an Aged Care, Disability or Health Support setting with a minimum of 6 months experience.
- In addition, all the applicants are required to have successfully completed an LLN test and demonstrate competence as working at Level 2 for all indicators to enrol for this qualification (issued within the last 12 months from the time of admission)
- It is also essential for the student to possess basic computer skills
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders are encouraged to apply.
If a candidate believes there would be a disclosable issue on their national police check, a confidential conversation will be required prior to enrolment to determine suitability for work.
How is the Course Assessed?
Our approach is to collect evidence on whether the student can perform to the standards of the workplace. This is based on the relevant unit of competency, and you’ll find these tools being used:
